Up for auction/sale is a wonderful and dramatic numismatic error variety from the United States Mint—an 1875 Shield Nickel, featuring prominent die cracks surrounding the date, preserved in choice Extra Fine (XF) condition.
Struck in Philadelphia during the post-Civil War era, this historic copper-nickel shield nickel features James B. Longacre's classic Union shield on the obverse and the numeral "5" surrounded by stars and rays on the reverse. Preserved in solid Extra Fine condition, this lovely specimen retains strong, crisp major design elements across the shield and leaves, enhanced significantly by bold, raised die fractures looping and weaving around the numerals of the 1875 date—a fantastic visual error for variety collectors.
