An exceptional, highly collectible example of an ancient Roman bronze coin struck under the elusive Emperor Jovian (Flavius Claudius Jovianus). Jovian’s place in history is brief but monumental. Following the sudden death of Julian the Apostate on campaign in Persia, Jovian—a Christian commander of the imperial bodyguard—was unexpectedly elevated to the purple by the legions. During his rapid, mere eight-month reign, he re-established Christianity as the favored religion of the Roman state before his tragic, accidental death from carbon monoxide poisoning in AD 364.
Because of his short reign, Jovian's coinage is scarce and highly prized. This specimen features the classic late Roman VOT V MVLT X reverse inscription (Votis Quinquennalibus Multis Decennalibus). This inscription represents the sacred imperial vows made by the emperor to the gods—undertaking public celebrations for his initial 5 years of rule, with prayers to reach a prosperous 10-year anniversary. Because Jovian never lived to see even his first year completed, this reverse stands as a poignant, historically dramatic artifact of a cut-short imperial dynasty.
