An incredible, highly specialized artifact from one of the most consequential turning points in world history: an authentic Roman provincial bronze unit minted in Philippi, Macedon during the reign of Rome’s very first emperor, Caesar Augustus.

This fascinating issue was struck to commemorate the monumental Battle of Philippi (42 BC), where Octavian (later Augustus) and Mark Antony decisively crushed the republican armies of Julius Caesar’s assassins, Brutus and Cassius. Following the victory, Augustus established a veteran colony of elite Praetorian guards at the site. This coin serves as an official civic tribute to those veterans and the imperial victory that birthed the Roman Empire.
